[This year’s 10 Best Films is written by me in couplets, in honor of, and in the style of Roger Angell’s “This Old Man,” the most entertaining book I read in 2015.]
This list does not include Leonardo, or Rooney or Jenifer or Kate,
We will have to see them and their films in Miami at a later date.
I do not mention the dull and drab Suffragette or Steve Jobs, which was a commercial bomb,
Or the newest Star Wars or The Big Short which we will see, perhaps, with Miami aplomb.
The best film of the year was the newspaper flick, Spotlight,
Focusing on the Boston Church’s conduct, which was to put it mildly, not air tight.
Mark Ruffalo as an investigative reporter is the Best Actor of the Year, that’s right!
One imperfect bio pic, a Hollywood and American selfie,
Trumbo is about the industry (post WWII) of great national shamie.
Then there was Brooklyn, an Irish immigration saga of mixed joys,
Which did not equal for me the one-day L.A. take with Lily Tomlin (Best Actress) of errant motherly ploys.
Three documentaries made me especially aware: first, The End of the Tour (Jesse
Eisenberg is special), second, the Russian The Red Army (about Fetisov, a hockey
player, no less Russian history); and third, HBO’s Listen to Me, Marlon (Brando!) do not
Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies recreates the Cold War and features Mark Rylance of Wolf
“No problem,” for Rylance or Tom Hanks, or Spielberg, for that matter, in this spy game.
Finally, there were two German films, about Jewish women in modern life,
The Phoenix, with a splendid Nina Hass and To Life—they both focus on present-day
With all of its modern strife. This rhymes runs dry, and our end is near;
Will see you guys same time next year. A Happy New Year, if you can,
And if not, just stick to the plan; The shortest days... they’re lengthening, lifts us by
design, And Peace on Earth is—still—the most needed bottom line.
