SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- The Scotch Plains Fanwood Martin Luther King Day of Service will be held Monday, Jan. 21, 2019, with the opening program and volunteer fair beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA (1340 Martine Ave., Scotch Plains).
The community is invited to attend the event, which celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Now in its 10th year, the day was created by volunteers for volunteers and has become a celebration of the interwoven, connected and compassionate community we create together.
The opening program at the YMCA will include: the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School Marching Band Drum Line; excerpts of Dr. King's speeches presented by the YMCA’s Achievers; a new community choir comprised of different faith-based volunteers, and the presenting of the MLK Community Award.
Following the opening program, there will be more than 25 volunteer opportunities for adults and families taking place at various local sites. Opportunities include a blood drive, Valentine’s Day cards and crafts, coupon cutting, food drives, health kits for the homeless, card making for those who serve, creating and delivering flower pots to Center for Hope Hospice, and more.
