11th Annual Madison 5K Run Set for May 4

February 28, 2014 at 9:58 AM

The Madison Education Foundation’s (MEF’s) 11th annual Madison 5K Run/Walk/Kids’ Fun Runs is slated for Sunday, May 4 at Madison High School, 170 Ridgedale Ave.

Proceeds from The Madison 5K support the work of MEF, whose mission is to award grants for initiatives that energize the creative and academic lives of Madison public school students but are above and beyond the school budget.  In December, MEF awarded 13 grants totaling $31,000, in the first of this school year’s three grant cycles.  The Board is currently reviewing the next cycle of grants and continues to see inspiring ideas coming in from Madison’s educators.

Area businesses are encouraged to support this community-wide event with sponsorships starting at $250 and increasing up to $3,000.  “Because our race registration covers all operating costs, every sponsor dollar will fund enrichment grants at all five Madison public schools,” says MEF Co-President Mary Schaenen.

Union Center National Bank (UCNB), a long-time Madison 5K sponsor, recently stepped up its support through the creation of the Union Center National Bank Enrichment Grant, which is an annual unrestricted gift of $5,000.  “We are immensely grateful to MHS alumnus and UCNB President & CEO Anthony C. Weagley for this incredible gift.  A $5,000 corporate donation allows us to accomplish so much for our district schools in just one grant cycle,” adds Schaenen.

As in previous years, Madison High School students in Shannon Lavelle’s Fine Art Digital Imaging class were tasked with designing the front of the race day t-shirt.  More than 60 designs were submitted to the 5K Race Committee for review and 10th grader Alex LaHaie’s design was chosen.

“Alex’s design is simple, yet bold, and will provide a unique race t-shirt this year,” says Kathleen Fowler, Madison 5K co-chair.  “We are always so impressed with the designs generated by the students and are thankful for the support of their teacher, Shannon Lavelle, who is a real asset to MEF throughout the design process.”

"The students in my Fine Art Digital Imaging classes enjoy working on the assignment to create an eye-catching design for the t-shirt for MEF's 5K run," says Lavelle.  "MEF has been generous in its support of the Digital Imaging program at MHS through a grant to purchase digital cameras and laptops, and these tools help to inspire the students in their design process."

The Madison 5K event includes a certified 5K race, a fitness walk and races for children of all ages.  Live music, entertainment and a raffle are also included in the day’s festivities.

Information about the race and sponsorship details can be found at or by contacting Kathleen Fowler at  Online registration will begin on April 1st at 9:00am.
