It seems hard to believe that the last month of summer is upon us, with Back to School advertising nudging us to shift gears into the Fall season. Along with the beginning of a new school year, many clubs, such as the Franklin Woman’s Club, will also re – start after a summer month hiatus and adult women (age 18+) are invited to join! You may be wondering what a Woman’s Club does and in particular, what does the Franklin Woman’s Club (FWC) offer.
The FWC, started in 1922, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan and nonsectarian service organization committed to improving the community through volunteerism while providing its members with opportunities to socialize, learn and develop new interests and skills. Each month from September through May, club members meet to hear about upcoming events and projects. Meetings feature an enjoyable educational or entertaining program or a service-oriented project along with refreshments and an opportunity to socialize. Besides monthly meetings, other events are held throughout the year to raise funds, help the community and have fun. Here’s a sample of upcoming programs and events for the 2018/2019 club year:
· International Dinner, in which members will share an ethnic dish and display items that represent their heritage
- Wine Tasting at Old York Cellars, Ringoes (a fundraiser that includes dinner and tasting of several delicious wines with fantastic views of the vineyard and Sourland Mountains)
- Holiday Music Performance by the Madrigals from Franklin High School in Renaissance attire
- Abigail Adams Impersonator in period costume
- Ageless Grace presentation, an interactive program that features exercises which stimulate the brain while working the body
- Presentation on The Healthy Brain and Healthy Aging by an award-winning journalist
- Homemade Pizza and Manicotti Cooking Classes
- 26th Annual Tricky Tray
- Ice Cream Social
Throughout the year, even more events are planned such as book club meetings, home and garden tours, holiday events, art or craft classes, conservation or legislative projects and nature walks. Service projects include planning and implementing events to raise funds for college scholarships and to help support many local charities. Other volunteer initiatives are hands-on such as collecting and filling back packs with personal items for children being placed in foster care, knitting or crocheting baby caps for a Prevent Child Abuse Initiative, sending holiday items to those serving in the military, collecting books for distribution to needy children and planting flowers at medical facilities. There are opportunities to showcase crafted items in competitions and training with the chance to apply that knowledge in club leadership roles. There is something for everyone through the Franklin Woman’s Club and the September meeting is a great time to check it out!
Our first meeting of the new season will be on Tuesday, September 25th at Franklin High School, 500 Elizabeth Avenue, Somerset. If you are interested in attending this or another meeting for a sample club experience, please email FWCmembershipinfo@gmail.com or call (732) 844 – 9002 to request a complimentary guest invitation. Generally, meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of the Month (7pm) between September and May with special meetings held at alternate locations.
