UNION, NJ – Kathy Cryan, editor of TAPinto Union, recently completed a three-day 60-mile walk to commemorate her 60th birthday.
“We are all so proud of her and were so happy to have been a part of her incredible journey," said Cryan's husband Joe. "She is absolutely the rock of our family, and we were thrilled to celebrate her birthday and her big accomplishment."
Cryan kicked off her 60-mile venture at the Princeton Hyatt on Thursday, Sept. 24 and, over the course of the three days, traveled through 20 towns and four counties. She walked for nearly eight straight hours daily to cover approximately 20 miles per day, joined along the way by her grandchildren, daughters, nieces, sisters, and friends who cheered her on and walked with her.
“My mom has always been a model of dedication and perseverance, and this walk was no exception,” said Cryan’s daughter Hannah. “I am so proud of her for reaching her goal and motivating me to continue many times throughout our journey”
Cryan's route was created around the East Coast Greenway, a walking and biking route stretching 3,000 miles from Maine to Florida. Deviations from the Greenway were built into her travels to include several landmarks of personal significance, such as her childhood home and the high school she graduated from as well as the house she raised her children in and her sisters’ houses.
She walked along 22 miles of the Delaware and Raritan Canal towpath, which runs from Trenton to New Brunswick and also walked through much of Franklin Township, where she resided for many years prior to moving to Union. Cyran also made her way through New Brunswick and into Edison, where she grew up and attended high school and, from there, walked through parts of Woodbridge, Rahway, Clark and Cranford to reach the finish line at her home in Union on Saturday, Sept. 26.
There, friends, and family were waiting.
“I am very, very proud of Mimi after her big walk," said Cryan's grandson, Landon Bell, 4, on behalf of himself and sister MacKenzie, 1, along with cousins, Jordan, 3, and Liam, 5. "Sixty miles is very far."
An avid walker, Cryan has participated in several long-distance walks over the past few years, including a 22-mile walk from the George Washington Bridge to Battery Park in Manhattan and a 20-mile walk from Union to Edison as well as a 60-mile walk through Washington D.C. to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Cryan's goal is to continue this tradition and walk 80 miles to celebrate her 80th birthday.
