WESTFIELD, NJ — Another student at Westfield High School has tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total number of students confirmed to have the virus to six, the school district’s superintendent said Friday afternoon.

In-person instruction will resume for some students Monday, Nov. 9 — the result of previously scheduled days off of school, Superintendent Margaret Dolan said in message to families.

Dolan said this because schools are closed on Tuesday, Nov. 3, for Election Day and also on Thursday, Nov. 5, and Friday, Nov. 6, for teacher professional days that coincide with the New Jersey Education Association’s convention, which is being held virtually. To make social distancing possible, the district had split students into two groups, with half of them attending in person school on certain days and the other half learning remotely.

“All extracurricular activities at the high school are suspended as well,” Dolan said in her letter. “I will work with the health department to reassess their status next week.”

A spokeswoman for the district confirmed that athletics are included in those extracurricular activities. The other schools will remain open for in-person instruction, Dolan said.

This includes the cancellation of upcoming Blue Devil football games on Oct. 24 against Ridge and Oct. 30 against Elizabeth, according to the athletics schedule.

The Nov. 4 resumption of in-person classes for some high school students will come exactly two weeks after the district learned of an initial five student COVID-19 cases, which Dolan said happened outside of school when the students were not wearing masks and observing social distancing protocols.

Officials have previously cited state guidelines requiring that a school shut for two weeks when there are two COVID-positive cases across multiple classes occurring within 14 days and there is no clear connection between the cases.
