SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Village President Alex Torpey presided over the township’s first same-sex marriages when Village Hall was reopened at midnight on Sunday night/Monday morning.
As the site of the first domestic partnership in the state in 2004, it was a fitting backdrop to the wedding of Marty Finkle and Mike Plake, that same couple.
"It's not often you get to witness history being made and watching same-sex couples finally being able to marry the people they love in our very own Village Hall by our very own Village President was something incredibly special,” said South Orange Trustee Sheena Collum. “It warmed my heart watching the couples and their families have this moment in time, one they've waited so long for and fought so hard for."
