HACKENSACK, N.J. -- A Virginia man who was in possession of $125,000 worth of marijuana in suitcases in the trunk of his car while driving on Route 80 Tuesday has been arrested and jailed.
Detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Task Force stopped Ryan Barnes, a hotel manager from Henrico, Virginia, on Route 80 West in Bogota on Tuesday, Dec. 1. After hearing inconsistencies in his story, detectives dispatched the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit to sniff for the presence of narcotics and barked with a positive indication.
After a search of the vehicle, detectives seized roughly 50 pounds of marijuana, which were contained in suitcases in the trunk -- a street value of $125,000 -- in addition to about $6,800 in cash.
Barnes was arrested and charged with one count of possession with intent to distribute marijuana, a first-degree crime. He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance at Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
