WESTFIELD, NJ—On Feb. 13, the Westfield Blue Devils Varsity Boys Basketball Team played in the Union County Tournament against Abraham Clark High School. The game was played at Rahway High School.
Abraham Clark of Roselle scored the first four points of the game. The first point Westfield scored was a foul shot made by player number 42, Scott Toresco. Abraham Clark scored five more points before Westfield scored again. These points were more foul shots, and they left Roselle leading Westfield 9-3.
By the end of the first quarter Abraham Clark was in the lead with a score of 16-11. During the beginning of the second quarter, WHS began to catch up. By the middle of the second quarter the game was tied 20-20, and when one team scored the other would soon catch up.
The game tied again at 26 points, and the second quarter ended in a tie of 29-29. Both Westfield and Abraham Clark continued to score during the third quarter, tying three times more. Westfield pulled ahead and was in the lead by the end of the third quarter with a score of 43-42.
Abraham Clark made many good plays in the fourth quarter and won the game with a score of 62-51.
Westfield High School Assistant Coach James McKeon told TAP, “Anybody knows that plays basketball, you get rides here and there, and they just had more shots at the time they needed to.” When WHS, “It wasn't lack of heart, it wasn't not trying,” he said.
But Westfield Number 23 Danny Mitchell commented, “We were slow, we were passive, we let that pressure get to us and in the end that's what hurt us.”
