WARREN, NJ - An accident on Route 78 East has stalled traffic in Warren, Watchung and Berkeley Heights. Warren police advise to use extreme caution when driving. Due to heavy rain, mutiple roads are flooded or are starting to flood.
Dead River Road is closed due to flooding as of 5:30 p.m. and Bonnie Burn in Watchung is being closed.
According to the National Weather Service, rainfall rates are ½ to 1 inch per hour and even higher rates are possible. Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause elevated levels on small creeks and streams and ponding of water in urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses and other poor drainage areas and low-lying spots.
The service warns people not to drive vehicles into areas where water covers the roadway, as the depth may be too great to allow cars to cross safely.
Traffic reports on NJ 101.5 are that Route 78 is backed up at least an hour between exits 36 and 43 as of 5:45 p.m.
