WESTFIELD, NJ — Known for its serene pond and manicured greenery, Mindowaskin Park can already be called charming, but starting Friday the park is gaining an air of enchantment, too.

As part of Westfield’s AddamsFest celebrations, children are invited to find “Fairy Doors” encircling the park’s bandstand and an “Enchanted Forest” with surprises in the park’s playground area Friday, Oct. 16, to Sunday, Nov. 1, organizers announced.

Families are invited to share their discoveries by tagging @AddamsFest on Instagram with the hashtag #mystical_mindowaskin, the organizers said.

The Enchanted Forest is sponsored by The Westfield Education Association, and Oceans Orthodontics is making “The Quest for the Halloween Fairy Doors,” organizers said.

It is among a series of socially distanced happenings the town has put together for its third annual celebration of Addams Family creator, Charles Addams, who is a Westfield native.

Organizers have also planned a “Painted Pumpkin Path” for Mindowaskin Park to showcase local artists’ pumpkin carving talent, AddamsFest announced.

AddamsFest says on its website that the Westfield Public Arts Commission will choose 30 painted pumpkins for the “Painted Pumpkin Path” — one pumpkin for each decade of Westfield’s history (the town is celebrating its 300th anniversary this year). Pumpkins are scheduled for display Friday, Oct. 23 – Saturday, Oct. 31.

“The theme for the pumpkins is ‘Westfield State of Mind,’ inviting artists to share their vision of Westfield’s history on everyone’s favorite Halloween decoration,” the organizers said.

“Whether it’s representative of the town’s colonial origins, a more recent moment in time, or even a depiction of life in 2020, the purpose is for artists to convey what they see in their community.”

But first, residents were invited to learn how to carve pumpkins in the manner done by the famed Maniac Pumpkin Carvers during an online pumpkin carving lesson that happened Friday night.

Members of the public can purchase AddamsFest pumpkin carving kits for $25.

“Featuring a variety of instruments for all types of creations, there are a limited number of kits available for $25,” says AddamsFest on its website. “Note that kits cannot be shipped. Pick-up location and date will be emailed to all purchasers.”
