After Months Of Anticipation, New York Marts Will Not Open

April 7, 2014 at 6:00 AM

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - After months of anticipation, New York Marts [the New York based mega Asian market known as the "Eataly of Chinatown"] will not be opening in the former Kings Super Market location in Berkeley Heights according to Mayor Joe Bruno.

"The bad news is that New York Marts is not coming," said Bruno.  The official word came from property owner, Dr. Fan to Bruno.

A meeting was held to iron details out between Dr. Fan, Mayor Bruno, Councilwoman Jeanne Kingsley, the New York Marts' architect and representatives.  Bruno wanted to clean the slate and work together to make the project progress.

"We wanted this to happen, it has to happen the right way.  It can't happen with code violations," said Bruno.

Dr. Fan has confirmed with the township that the deal is not progressing and is entertaining ideas for a replacement to New York Marts.
