Alex Livernois, a senior at Scotch Plans-Fanwood High School competed in the NJSIAA Meet of Champions on Saturday, March 1. He placed 18th overall and 12th in the fast heat with a finishing time of nine minutes and 42 seconds in the 3,200-meter race.
“I was running alongside the best and it was definitely an awesome experience,” said Livernois. To get to the Meet of Champions, Livernois ran the 3,200 meter race in nine minutes and 32 seconds to place third in the Groups meet.
“I just took it one race at a time and ended up improving constantly. Once I got a decent personal record in sectionals, I knew I wanted to make it to the Meet of Champions,” said Livernois.
Livernois has been running track and cross country for the Raiders since his sophomore year when he moved to Scotch Plains from California. Since then Jeffrey Koegel has been his track and cross country coach and has pushed Livernois beyond what he thought he could accomplish.
“My coach has been a large help to me. Besides the training and advice over my years of running with him, he gave me the best advice before the Groups meet this year: just stick with the top six, run and don’t worry about the rest,” said Livernois.
Livernois will be competing for the spring track team this spring season and will look to build off his success during the winter track season.
