HAWTHORNE, NJ - A Paterson man was arrested on Saturday, November 21, in connection with an alleged burglary and theft, according to the Hawthorne Police Department.

A burglar alarm was set off at the P&A Auto Parts shop, located at 23 Goffle Road, which prompted the arrival of a police patrol.  The Department said that when the officers arrived, they found signs of forced entry which included a shattered glass door.  The officers found the shop clear but were alerted to a sound of rustling coming from the wooded area behind the shop.

Going to investigate the sound, officers observed a man "running up the river bank holding a bag."  The officers commanded him to stop, to no avail, and the suspect, identified as 26 year old Daniel Acevedo, ran into the Passaic River.  Officers said he got in so far as neck-deep before turning around after apparently realizing he could not cross.

"Video footage was obtained from the business which confirmed the burglary and theft suspect," Hawthorne Police Lieutenant Matthew Hoogmoed said.

Acevedo was charged, on a warrant for burglary as well as criminal mischief, theft, hindering apprehension, resisting arrest, and the unlawful possession of a weapon.  Afterward he was taken to the Passaic County Jail.
