WESTFIELD, NJ — Brooke Scheuermann will play lacrosse at Salisbury University next year.

The Westfield High School defender, who recently signed to play at the Division 3 school, is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week. And before she heads off to play in Maryland, Scheuermann hopes to play one last season for the Lady Blue Devils.

“I’m really looking forward to this season, especially because our season got canceled last year,” Scheuermann said. “I really hope that we can have a season. I know that we are going to follow the proper precautions and do everything we can to have a senior season.”

Scheuermann, a 17-year-old senior at Westfield High School who made the varsity team in her freshman year, has been playing lacrosse since she was 7 years old.

“It’s just fun to be on a team with other girls, and they really motivate you to be the best that you can be,” she said. “I’ve always loved competition ever since I was little.”

Head lacrosse coach Abby Cohn said she had suggested Salisbury University and the coach there was receptive when Scheuermann reached out.

“She sent the film to the head coach via email,” Cohn said. “He offered her a spot on their roster almost right away, which speaks volumes in regards to her play.”

In addition to excelling at lacrosse, Scheuermann plans to compete in winter track this year as a sprinter. It will be her third year running winter track after joining in her sophomore year. As a freshman, Scheuermann said, she played on the soccer team.

With the winter season not starting until next month, however, she is keeping in shape.

“During the week, I usually train every day and then take one off day,” Scheuermann said. “I either do some type of running or stick skills or foot work or I do some weightlifting, and sometimes I go training with one or two of my teammates.”

She’s not the first Scheuermann to play lacrosse.

“My sister also played on the varsity team with me freshman and sophomore year,” she said of her sister, Nicole. “I always looked up to her when I was playing, and I would always play my hardest or play harder when I was playing on the team with her.”
