WESTFIELD, NJ — The high school senior and track team co-captain earned a medal in the 55-meter hurdles at the Yale Track Classic on Saturday.

Lauren Triarsi, who placed fourth in the event at the invitational meet in New Haven, Connecticut, is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.

Triarsi, 18, had a rough start in the trials but still qualified for the semi-final race, which she finished in 8.70 seconds before completing a final race with a time of 8.75 seconds, head girls track coach Jennifer Buccino said.

It marked a personal best for Triarsi.

“The fact that she is running so well so early in the season indicates she has room to improve as the season progresses, which is what we would like to see,” Buccino said. “We feel that record will be broken again before the season is over.”

The Yale Invitational follows the team’s placing third overall in the Union County relays and, Triarsi said, she is working to improve her times as the season progresses.

“My team and coaches are always pushing me to be the best athlete I can be, and I could not thank them enough,” she said. “I am also friends with the girls I compete against, and they continually inspire me to push myself to be a better athlete and person. We really are there for each other.”

Being a co-captain, she said, comes with a large responsibility, especially because of the track team's size.

“Being the biggest team in the high school, it is awesome to meet so many people because it truly is an inclusive sport,” Triarsi said. “Freshmen year, I looked up to the senior captains as role models, but I was also friends with many with many of them.”

While she is on the varsity team, Triarsi said, she keeps in mind the junior varsity and freshman teams.

“We are trying to do big things this season, and this team is full of talent,” she said. “We also are a huge team, so there is always a ton of opportunity to succeed on all levels, not just in varsity. Our JV and freshman teams are awesome and do not go unnoticed.”
