WESTFIELD, NJ – A center back defense player, Lily Maz is a local fly girl, at least when it comes to field hockey.
The 17-year-old high school senior and year-four varsity starter has led the team’s defense, powering the Lady Blue Devils to a 12-5 record this season, head girls field hockey coach Caitlin Cheddar said.
Lily is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.
“Lily is one of the most intense people when it comes to competition on the field,” Cheddar said. “You watch her play, and there is no doubt in your mind that she is giving 100 percent. She’s always got her teammates’ backs.”
Maz has a penchant for a field hockey defense move, which involves rushing an opposing player for the ball.
“My favorite part is definitely being able to fly during corners,” Maz said. “I really like being the first person out there and knowing my team can count on me.”
Maz, who also plays basketball at Westfield High School, said she intends to play club sports in college next year.
For now, she is enjoying the support of her teammates at Westfield High School. While she noted teenage girls can be full of laughs, Maz described a team practice that contrasts from the average.
“Before every game, as a team, we all stand together,” Maz said. “We have a collective moment of silence before we start.”
The Lady Blue Devils play East Brunswick in the first match of a state tournament next Friday, she said.
“It’ll be really interesting,” Maz said. “I think that we can go pretty far in our state tournament.”
