WESTFIELD, NJ — Trey Rabinowitz is on a roll.

The co-captain of the Westfield High School varsity bowling team and his teammates secured a 7-0 win over Roselle Park in a match at Jersey Lanes Wednesday afternoon. Rabinowitz is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week. The win in Linden was the latest in a series of successes for the Blue Devils.

“Our team has finally hit our stride, and we’re going to have a strong rest of the way through the season,” Rabinowitz said.

He is confident because he has prepared. The 17-year-old senior had been playing in Saturday leagues and sharpening his game at the lanes between three and four days per week during the off-season, head coach Ralph Corey said.

“All of his work has him lined up to have his best season yet,” Corey said. “Trey is slotted in the first position that sets the tone for the rest of the Westfield team when competing against other schools. Three games into the season, Trey has a 222 average and helped lead the team to the top score in the conference.”

Rabinowitz achieved his personal best yet in a match against Rahway Nov. 26, scoring a set of 717, Corey said. Rabinowitz noted it was a success for the entire team.

“It was a great win,” he said. “We had just come off of a close loss against Linden. … We won the conference last year, and they came in second, so we knew they were out to get us in the first game.”

It was not his first roll at the lanes.

Rabinowitz began bowling in seventh grade, modeling his efforts after his brother, Jake, and with the help of his father, Alan, who then started a bowling program at the district’s intermediate school level to prepare students for high school competition, he said.

Those seventh-graders are now seniors, Rabinowitz said. The team next plays their Union County rival, Cranford, 4 p.m. Thursday at Jersey Lanes.

“It’s all coming together,” Rabinowitz said.
