SPARTA, NJ-The Sparta Alpine school is in the process of running its bi-annual food drive. This is a wonderful opportunity to help The Samaritan Inn feed the many people in Sussex County who are in need.
Twice a year, each of the classrooms in first through third grade are assigned a specific food item to donate. This is done to ensure that the food pantry gets a sufficient amount of each food item needed to make up their bags. For example, two classes are asked to bring in canned vegetables, two classes are asked to bring in drink items, while two others are asked to provide lunch box snacks such as crackers, raisins and granola bars. One grocery bag of food can provide as many as 11 meals for a family. All of the food is collected for a week in a box outside each classroom. At the end of the week, it is collected by volunteer parents who then deliver the food to the always extremely grateful Samaritan Inn.
The Samaritan Inn is a non-profit 501 organization which provides emergency and temporary shelter to Sussex County residents who are homeless. They also distribute over 10,000 pounds of food to Sussex County residents each year from their food pantry.
With Thanksgiving just days away, this is not only a wonderful gesture in the spirit of the holiday but an important life lesson to the kids about the true importance of being thankful for what they have and giving to those who need it the most.
