June 6, 2014 at 4:53 PM

SPARTA, NJ-Students and staff at Alpine Elementary School demonstrate the importance of reading, especially on the weekend, by participating in “Relax and Read.”

Students at Alpine Elementary School were asked to bring their beach towel and a favorite book to school on Saturday, May 31, 2014 to participate in Relax and Read, a school wide reading celebration.

Promptly, at 11 a.m. the entire Alpine school family came together on the back field to Relax and Read for thirty minutes.   After reading, many students continued the enjoyment of reading.  They shared their books with an informal book talk with their classmates.

This reading celebration promoted the importance of summer reading and Alpine Principal’s Summer Reading Initiative sponsored by the Alpine PTO.

According to the National Reading Panel, “The importance of reading as an avenue to improved reading has been stressed by theorists, researchers, and practitioners alike, no matter what their perspectives.  There are few other ideas as widely accepted than that reading is learned through reading.”

Principal Giuseppe Leone said, " The Relax and Read activity was a perfect way to kick off summer reading.  Students were really engaged in their reading and the teachers were great role models.  As I walked around, students were eager to tell me what they were reading about. It is our hope that the students continue reading throughout the summer."
