Natasha McFadden will serve full-time with Greater Plainfield Habitat for Humanity until August 2014 by organizing special events and initiatives in an effort to raise a goal of $100,000 towards the affiliate’s current five-home construction project.  Her focus will also be to promote awareness of the affiliate’s 25th anniversary in 2014.

Originally from Upstate New York, Natasha chose to relocate to this community to serve with Plainfield Habitat for an entire year.  “I’ve volunteered with multiple Habitat affiliates over the past few years, assisting with a wide variety of programs. But now, I won’t just be lending a helping hand,” comments Natasha.  “AmeriCorps provides me the opportunity to lead and to put my ideas into action.  I am thrilled to see what our community can do to serve more families and the difference that we can make together.”

AmeriCorps is a national service program managed by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Habitat for Humanity was one of the first organizations to partner with CNCS when AmeriCorps began in 1994, and this continued partnership has engaged more than 7,000 AmeriCorps members in support of Habitat’s mission and in the cause of adequate and affordable housing.

“Habitat for Humanity has benefited from the dedicated service and tangible impact of AmeriCorps members in many ways” said Rev. Jeremy Montgomery, Executive Director of Greater Plainfield Habitat. “AmeriCorps will help us immeasurably to build more impact in this community.  Natasha’s impact will be tremendous as she helps us to raise more funds to serve more families.”

Natasha will join a network of more than 500 Habitat AmeriCorps members who are serving in more than 150 communities throughout the United States.  Since 2011, AmeriCorps members have served more than 2,400 families, provided more than 1 million hours of service, mobilized more than 200,000 volunteers and raised millions of dollars in cash and in-kind resources.

Each year, tens of thousands of AmeriCorps members serve with organizations around the country to help meet the needs of local communities.  For more information please visit or

About Greater Plainfield Habitat for Humanity

Since 1989, Greater Plainfield Habitat for Humanity, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, is committed to improving the lives of low-income families by helping them build and buy their own simple, decent homes.  Habitat offers families a hand up, not a hand out.  Every partner family devotes at least 200 hours per adult of sweat equity to help build their home or a neighbor’s home and secures a 0% mortgage provided by Habitat.  Plainfield Habitat supports partner families with training in budgeting, home and landscape maintenance and how to be a good neighbor.   To date, thirty‐five homes have been built totally by volunteer labor using donations of money and materials from the community.  Plans are also progressing on its largest project to-date, a five-home development on West Seventh Street in Plainfield, which began in Fall 2012.  To volunteer, donate, or own a Habitat home, visit  Follow us at

Beckerman’s Theory of Everything

Any armchair theoretical physicist knows that Stephen Hawking has pursued a lifelong quest to come up with a Theory of Everything. This all-encompassing theory would tie together general relativity (large scale and high mass galaxies, stars, etc), quantum theory (quantum mechanics, quarks, atoms, subatomic particles), and Newtonian physics (gravity on small bodies, gas laws, electromagnetism) to ...

Three Sisters, Three Queens by Philiippa Gregory (Touchstone of Simon and Schuster, 2016)

When one reads an historical novel by Philippa Gregory, s/he is transported magically through the power of words to that era. Given the turbulence of the recent political scene in America, returning once again to the complicated and violent Tudor reign helped me to escape the ugliness of the ...

‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales' Captures Old-Fashioned Nostalgia at Shakespeare Theatre

MADISON, NJ – It’s clear the Welsh love to sing as the evening moves on with relatives gathering for Christmas dinner at the Thomas home in Wales.

The play opens with three children and then a chorus singing “In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,” a melancholy tune that conjures visions of Swansea, a village in Wales,  with “fallen snow on ...
