Annual Cub Scout Camporee 2014 Honors Military Heroes

May 19, 2014 at 12:29 AM

SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ – More than 100 Cub Scouts from local Packs 4 (Brunner School), 34 (Evergreen), 98 (Coles), 103 (St. Bart’s) and 277 (McGinn) and neighboring Westfield, Summit and other New Jersey towns gathered at Camp Winnebego in Rockaway for the annual Spring Camporee this weekend.

Scouts are encouraged to “unplug” from electronic devices and engage in activities including go-carts, archery, BB shooting, a fishing derby, and a rock climbing wall. The Camporee began with an Opening Ceremony and a roll call of troops from across the area. Cubs also participated in the “Readyman” activity that teaches them how to respond to people with medical emergencies ranging from broken arms to snake bites.

The theme of this year’s Camporee was honoring those who serve in the military.  Personnel from the New Jersey Army National Guard brought two Humvees that typically carry rocket launchers and other weapons. Cubs were permitted to climb into the vehicles, look through the optics, and try on battle gear, including helmets, and flak jackets.  U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Strike Team brought a 26-foot small boat for scouts to climb, along with hazmat gear to try on.  Members of the Arms Collectors Club brought a collection of WWII U.S. Marines uniforms and rifles and other military items.

Saturday’s festivities culminate with barbecue followed a Saturday evening campfire, including skits put on by the Cubs themselves, as well as a solemn Flag Retirement ceremony and marshmallow roasting and s’mores.
