WARREN, NJ - It's tradition. That day in the life of a Cub Scout when he is given a block of wood, four plastic wheels, four axle nails and told to make a car. Warren Pack 182's annual Pinewood Derby raced at Watchung Hills on Saturday.
For Warren Pack 182, a Pinewood Derby kit is given to the Cub and his dad, or grandpa or mom or other guardian. In most cases it's hard to tell who is more excited about the project: the cub who gets to use tools, or the adult who gets to relive childhood by helping to build and race a toy car.
Some of the themed cars this year included a Twix bar, a minion, a pencil, and an Olaf car. In the Derby Cafe, a derby themed silent cake auction raised funds for the Pack. Medals were given to the top three finishers in each den and trophies to the specialty winners and top three overall fastest cars.
With over 70 racers, this years derby was a race where hundredths of a second separated first and third place measured by a laser finish line mechanism that feeds into a computer. The top three spots overall went to Ethan Dsouza, David Krause and Jake Checchio with average speed and times of:
