WEST ORANGE, NJ -   Global Expression through art will be the theme of Classroom Close-Up NJ, when it films Redwood Elementary School students in their class under the direction of long time Art Teacher, Lisa Schustak, this October. The students will be engaged in creating projects based on the principles and elements of art inspired from artifacts brought back from her summer travels in Turkey.  Ms. Schustak has been traveling with GEEO, a 501c3 non-profit organization that helps and encourages educators to travel abroad.

As an educator, Ms Schustak believes she has an ongoing commitment to promoting multicultural education and to promoting tolerance and understanding of people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.  She has a deep and energizing love of travel, particularly throughout developing countries.  “Traveling has offered me countless opportunities to learn about new customs and traditions and to gain a more accurate understanding of history and expanding global perspectives,” expressed Ms Schustak.

Throughout her travels, Ms. Schustak is continually reminded by the fact that art is a universal language, a natural and vital expression of communication.  “The experience of new sights, smells, sounds, the collision of old and new ideas is a constant source of inspiration, and one which I often try to draw upon when I am back in the classroom,” said Ms Schustak.

Her students love that she travels, not only because of the beautiful and interesting objects that she brings back and displays in the classroom, but also because of her passion in finding ways to integrate these materials into lesson plans designed to inspire creative art and connect children to the world.

Ms. Schustak stated, “Through travel I am able to learn far beyond the range of what any text book can teach. It is important for educators to never stop being learners.”
