Athena's Greek Kitchen, Formerly Greek Delights, Opens at 320 Main Street in West Orange

August 16, 2014 at 9:25 PM

WEST ORANGE, NJ - Greek Delights, formerly located at 558 Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair, has just reopened as Athena's Kitchen at 320 Main Street, making a lot of people very happy.

Ursula Garcia is the owner of Athena's Kitchen. She told Tap into West Orange, "I have had the business for 11 years now. We make everything from scratch."

When asked about customer favorites, Ursula said, "The customers seem to enjoy the gyros and also the traditional greek dishes. But I think the.most popular dishes are the spinach pie, moussaka, gyros, and Greek salad with our delicious homemade dressing."

Tap into West Orange stopped by Athena's Kitchen for lunch on August 14 with some difficult customers in tow, including a 17 year old son and an order for a food-fussy 20 year old. The traditional gyros did not disappoint, nor did the souvlaki chicken. After Ursula provided a piece of her homemade baklava, we knew we would be back.

On August 16, with both boys out of the house, another stop at Athena's Kitchen proved satisfying to two tired parents. This time we tried the fried zucchini accompanied by a potato garlic dip and pita, followed by a mixed gyro and a Greek salad with grilled chicken. While there, we ran into friends that heard about the opening and were excited that a Greek spot had opened in town. Ironically, we received an email from a friend during checkout that simply asked, "how about  BIG welcome for Greek Delights, relocated from Montclair to our own Main Street?"

Ursula, who is Peruvian, worked for Greek employers for 12 years and learned to cook authentic Greek food from them.

Athena's Kitchen is several weeks away from a grand opening, but they are open for lunch and dinner. Hours are Monday through Friday, 11:30 am - 9:00 pm; Saturdays, 11:30 am - 10 pm, and Sundays, 1:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Parking in available in a small lot to the right of restaurant and diners can eat-in in a super casual environment. A new awning and cosmetic work is expected to be done on the premises over the next several weeks.

According to Ursula, a Nutley resident, Greek Delights was a popular spot in the Essex County area. High rent and tough parking made it difficult to stay in Montclair.

The website is in the process of redesign, which Ursula hopes to have up and running shortly. You can call Athena's Kitchen at (862) 704-6269 and in the interim Tap into West Orange is providing a copy of their current menu. The best news of all? They cater, they do take-out, and they deliver for $2.00 in West Orange, Montclair, Glen Ridge, and more. Prices are reasonable and portions are generous.

The restaurant plans to become involved with the Downtown West Orange Alliance and make appearances at the Friday Farmers Market (12-6 in Quigley parking lot) for the community to sample some of their favorite dishes in the near future.

"We have a lot to do," Ursula said, "But we're taking it one week at a time.

Getting a Handle on Thanksgiving

This year, on our National Day of Thanks, I would like to express my gratitude for having hands.

We typically don’t thank our body parts because they seldom leave us.  Most of us have not experienced unfortunate accidents or suffered the horrible consequences of war; tragic events  which might cause us to lose a limb.

Most of us take our fingers and hands and elbows ...

My Epic Beauty Fails

One day as I was looking around a high-end cosmetics store for a new lipstick, a “beauty expert” approached me and said that I was so stunning I should forget the lipstick, and get a lip plumper instead. At first I wondered why I needed a lip plumper if I was already so stunning. But then I thought, “Now here is someone wearing a badge that says, ‘beauty expert,’ so ...
