SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Roosevelt Elementary PTO held their 2nd annual Designer Bag Bingo on Friday night, February 7, 2014. The doors opened at 6:30 pm with throngs of women waiting to try their luck playing Bingo with hopes of winning a designer bag. The designer’s included: Coach, Kate Spade, Vera Bradley, Michael Kors, Badgley Mischka, Marc Jacobs and Tory Burch. In addition, there were special raffles for Coach and Michael Kors items.
The night was a sellout event with 306 people in attendance. Many attendees brought in trays of food, snacks and desserts to enhance their night of fun and chance. Joe Scrudato, whose son attends Roosevelt, worked the crowd selling 50/50’s. Scrudato ran out of tickets for the 50/50 which netted the winner over $800.00. The school provided complimentary coffee and sold soft drinks and water throughout the evening.
The Chairperson and brainchild of the event was Carmela Benowitz. Benowitz stated last year 210 people attended, so this year they started out with 250 tickets which were sold out within a week and half. More tickets were printed and Benowitz said she was getting calls for tickets, but unfortunately some people had to be turned away. Benowitz and her committee have already started getting feedback and planning next year’s event. She said “the proceeds from last year’s event enabled the PTO to purchase Smart Boards and a new PA system for the gym.” This year the PTO members will be meeting with the teachers from each grade to see what is needed, but they do like to earmark the money towards upgrading technology for the students.
Benowitz commented the success of Friday night’s event was “due to the dedication of her committee members, parents, PTO members, teachers, the community and the support of Principal Diehl”.
Principal Diehl who served as the “caller” for the evening stated as he made the rounds to all the tables, “everyone was enjoying the event.” He was thrilled to see a large participation from the staff. Diehl further stated “this type of fundraiser differs from the normal selling of an item(s) to parents, it brings everyone out and gives everyone an opportunity to be involved.”
In addition to thanking everyone involved with the event, Benowitz thanked Jen and Dan Ratti from Oak Tree Liquors for donating all the door prizes. Jen Ratti who attended the event stated “it was really a great night, I think everyone walked out a winner regardless if you won a designer bag. We are happy to support South Plainfield’s children and the community at events like this”.
