Author McHugh Tells Seniors to "Go For It" May 15

April 17, 2014 at 9:36 AM

SUMMIT, NJ -  Discussing some innovative ways to continue to stay active while aging, local author Mary McHugh will present her latest book, "Go for It! - 100 Ways to Feel Young, Vibrant, Interested and Interesting After 50", May 15, from 2-3 p.m. at SAGE Eldercare.

“I’m looking forward to speaking again at SAGE.  Their work makes such a valuable contribution to the community.  I always enjoy meeting the families who come to SAGE and the remarkable people who run such an incredibly useful organization,” said McHugh.   “My presentation will focus on some of the ways that I’ve found to keep life interesting and enjoyable after 50, and I look forward to interacting with the audience to learn about their own lives, activities and perspectives.”

McHugh has published 22 books on subject ranging from feminism to “crotchety old men.”  At the present time, she is writing a series of murder mysteries for Kensington Books about five women in their fifties who tap dance on cruise ships, luxury trains, and at resorts.

She previously worked for The New York Times for their special sections and her article, “Telling Jack” in The New York Times Magazine was nominated for an award for best personal essay by the American Society of Journalists and Authors.  Her book, "Special Siblings: Growing Up with Someone with a Disability", was awarded a prize for Special Recognition of a National Project by The Arc of New Jersey.

McHugh worked as an articles editor at three national magazines, and was a contributing editor for Cosmopolitan magazine.  Her work has also appeared in Good HousekeepingFamily Circle, and seniorwomen.com.

“We are excited to have Ms. McHugh speak – she has such a vivacious personality and quick wit that this presentation is sure to be a real treat. The presentation and topic fits perfectly with SAGE’s mission of helping older adults remain in the one place they feel most comfortable – their own homes,” noted Jessica Rosenzweig Gruber, Executive Director of SAGE.

To register or learn more about the May 15 program, call SAGE Eldercare at 908 / 598-5548, or email education@sageeldercare.org.  The program, which is free and open to the public, will be held at SAGE, located at 290 Broad Street.

Beckerman’s Theory of Everything

Getting a Handle on Thanksgiving

This year, on our National Day of Thanks, I would like to express my gratitude for having hands.

We typically don’t thank our body parts because they seldom leave us.  Most of us have not experienced unfortunate accidents or suffered the horrible consequences of war; tragic events  which might cause us to lose a limb.

Most of us take our fingers and hands and elbows ...
