WAYNE, NJ – We are getting used to so many things being canceled because of COVID-19. For the Wayne Parks & Recreation Department, this past spring and early summer has been a quiet time. However, September is looking like a fun month for Wayne Township as the Recreation Department is moving ahead with many activities for residents.
To end August, the 2020 Wayne Township Summer Tennis Camp begins August 17. This is for children aged 7-16 years old. There are two camps. One from Aug 17 – Aug 21, and a second camp from Aug 24 – 28. Click here for the registration form and more detail.
Kicking off September is the rescheduling of the Mayor’s health initiative: Wayne Walks, which happens on September 5. This is a group walking program to encourage healthier lifestyles. “They will be one-mile walks, multiple days per week in neighborhoods throughout town,” said Wayne Parks & Rec Director Tim Roetman. “The goal is for people to get up, get moving, meet some new friends and get healthy.” Click here for details and registration form.
September 8 is the start of the Wayne Women’s Volleyball League, although registration must be done by August 14. This is for women ages 18+ and because of COVID-19 precautions, all games will be held outdoors at Captain Kilroy Park, mid-week, running from Sep throughout Oct. Special precautions will be made to keep everyone safe. Click here for more details.
September 9 is the date for the annual Wayne Senior Picnic. This will be held at the James Roe Pool, and all accommodations will be made to keep everyone safe. The event is open to Wayne Seniors (62+) only. Click here for more details and to register.

The very next day, on September 12, is Wayne’s annual Doggie Dip Day at Captain Kilroy Park. Bring your furry friend to frolic and play in and out of Tom’s Lake. You and your dog can socialize and enjoy time together. There will be adoptions available from the Wayne Animal Shelter, and free samples and toy demos from PetValu. Click here for more details.
Fall Tennis Lessons begin on September 15 for kids and adults. They are Tuesdays & Thursdays from Sep 15 – Oct 8 and Saturdays from Sep 26 – Oct 31. Click here for more details.
Details are still being worked out, but Roetman is looking to hold the first annual Wayne Cornhole tournament on Saturday, September 26. Stay tuned for more details.
“I’m excited to finally be getting back to providing some fun activities for our residents,” said Roetman. “We have the Summer Concert Series going on currently, and now this great lineup for September, and more to come!”
"Everything has changed a little because of the pandemic," explained Roetman. "We're following all the guidelines for outdoor events, including social distancing when possible and asking everyone to wear masks if not."
Unfortunately, as has been previously announced, both the rescheduled Wayne Day and Memorial Day Parade have been canceled this year.
