EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - After getting stung by Piscataway, 45-40, a little more than a week ago, the East Brunswick High School boys basketball team left little to chance last night on their home court.
The Bears, using a vicious defensive effort and a strong focus for all four quarters, dominated at both ends of the court in a 57-39 rout of Piscataway in the first-round matchup of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament. As usual, Amir Bell led the way, with 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, as the Bears came out left little doubt from the opening tip as to the outcome of this game. The first quarter ended withe the Bears on top, 16-8, and the Bears only continued to increase their lead in each quarter while holding Piscataway to single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters of the game. Carl Taylor chipped in with 15 points, and Matt Ross had nine.
The second-seeded Bears will have a major test in their second-round matchup this Sunday at 1:30 p.m., as they will face their red-hot next-door neighbors, the 10th-seeded Chargers of Spotswood High School, winners of 11 consecutive games, at Middlesex Community College.
