OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla.  Kara Kaufmann, of Belvidere, N.J., was the reserve champion at the 2017 American Quarter Horse Association Collegiate Horsemanship Challenge, held Nov. 11-12 during the Lucas Oil AQHA World Championship Show in Oklahoma City, Okla.

A Sophomore at Auburn University, Kaufmann was one of only 16 riders invited to compete.

“Kara has proven early on that she is among the college elite in Horsemanship,” Auburn head coach Greg Williams said. “We are proud to have Kara as Auburn’s representative in this all-star event.”

A total of eight riders were selected from National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) institutions. In addition, eight riders from the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) also participated. They competed on unfamiliar America Quarter Horses.

Kaufmann was chosen by the NCEA selection committee based on her performance from the 2016-17 season. Last year, she was an NCEA All-American and the 2017 SEC Freshman Horsemanship Rider of the Year. She finished with an 11-3-1 overall record, including an undefeated run at the NCEA Championships.

Alfred University Junior, Haley Ruffner, of Allegany, N.Y. was one of the riders representing the IHSA.

She placed fourth in Horsemanship at the individual Open Horsemanship at the IHSA Nationals in May to qualify her as one of the top riders in the nation. Also during the IHSA Nationals, Ruffner finished fifth in the individual Open Reining. She also rode in the AQHA High Point Western Rider class which combines both Horsemanship and Reining. Each rider competes in both classes and the combined points from both result in their overall score. Ruffner was the Reserve National Champion in the class.

Ruffner also rides for the hunt seat team.
