BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - The Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad and Fire Department responded to an accident involving a tractor trailer that crashed into the rear of a passenger bus returning to New York City from Pennsylvania at 4:14 a.m., Monday on Route 78 East at mile marker 45.
The Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad EMT unit was first to arrive at the scene. Upon entering the bus full of 60 passengers, the EMTs' quickly triaged the passengers identifying eight non-life threatening injuries.
Additional ambulances were requested from the Union County EMS mutual aid. Several passengers were removed from the bus complaining of neck and head injuries and were backboarded as a precaution. Units from Springfield First Aid Squad, Mountainside First Aid Squad, New Providence EMS, and the Berkeley Heights Fire Dept. assisted the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad with patient evaluation and transport to Overlook Hospital.
Several of the patients were evaluated and released at the scene. The remaining passengers waited on the bus for a replacement bus to take them to their destination.
