BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - The Berkeley Heights Community Pool hosted the Berkeley Swim Club on Tuesday night for the First Annual “Battle of the Berkeley Pools”. The friendly competition was close throughout, but the Swim Club was able to pull out with the win and head home victorious by a score of 230-215.
Before the start of the meet, BHCP Head Coach Brittany Guinee honored the two graduating senior swimmers, Juliette Busby and Amanda Matrone. Both girls have been members of the team for over ten years.
“It’s hard to believe that after 13 years (of swimming for the BHCP) it’s all over after tonight,” Busby later commented. “I’ve made so many great memories on this team.”
The meet was electrifying right from the start. The Girls 15-18 year old Breaststroke was a crowd thriller, in which Marcela Martinez and Amanda Chin, from BHCP, were narrowly out-touched by BSC swimmer Indiana Curtis. The three girls were neck and neck for most of the race before Curtis was able to pull ahead towards the end.
The 13 and over Co-ed Medley Relay proved to be another race that was down to the wire. Both teams were back and forth for the first three legs, but BHCP anchor Julia Woo was able maintain the lead that her teammates had secured to get the win.
The Berkeley Swim Club will house the winner’s plaque until the next “Battle of the Berkeley Pools”, which will take place at the Swim Club next summer.
