SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Local talent Billy Wilkins has released his latest single, “Better Than You” to iTunes, Spotify, and Apple Music. (Click here to listen to a snippet.)
"I’m very excited for this one. The bulk of the song was recorded in Seaside Heights last summer with my good friend and producer John Flynn," Wilkins said in an interview with TAPintoSPF. "It’s a refreshing, upbeat groove with lyrics about being afraid to fall in love and considering what might happen if I ever actually did. I also touch upon the feelings of wanting a relationship but being with the wrong person."
Wilkins is thrilled that his mentor Jerry Wonda (The Fugees, Whitney Houston, Justin Bieber) recorded "an amazing bass track for the song."
Billy developed an obsession with playing guitar by age 11. After being taught the basics by his father, he began studying at a local music shop and later began studying with local guitar legend Karl Cochran. Billy started to write, sing, and perform his own original songs at the age of 14. After graduating from high school, Billy attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music, majoring in music performance.
"It was an honor to have been there to watch happen, and Grammy Award-winning mix engineer Serge Tsai (Kanye West, Carlos Santana) brought the sonic of the song to another level," Wilkins said.
"This song is truly something different. I sort of stepped out of my usual bubble to make it and something just felt right to me. I hope people enjoy this song as much as I do," he added.
