BLOOMFIELD, NJ – Returning to their home court for the first time in two weeks, Bloomfield Girls Varsity Basketball got back in the win column with a hard-fought 50-44 win over SEC Liberty Division rival Columbia Cougars on Tuesday at Bloomfield High School.

The victory marks three wins in the past four games for Bloomfield.

Thanks to turnovers, errant passes and missed layups by Bloomfield, Columbia built a 15-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.  Even two timeouts called by Coach Zac Dearwater couldn’t get the Bengals on track.

As the scene shifted to the second quarter, Bloomfield caught fire with a 6-0 run, then a 14-0 run to close out the quarter outscoring Columbia 20-5 to take a 28-20 lead at halftime.

Columbia, however, would not go away so easily outscoring Bloomfield in the third and fourth quarters to come within 1 point before the Bengals pulled away for good with the 6-point win.

Senior Sarah Edmond led Bloomfield with 12 points, junior Samantha Columna and senior Camrynn Referente had 10 points apiece, and freshmen Lucy Heyman picked up 8 points.

With the win, the Bengals improve to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the division.  Bloomfield sits in second place in the division 5-0 behind Montclair Immaculata.

Last week, Bloomfield beat Millburn 51-44 and Montclair 56-35.  Their only defeat in this four-game stretch was to West Essex 50-46 on Saturday in North Caldwell.

With the loss, Columbia falls to 4-7 overall and 3-2 in the division.

The Bengals return to action this Saturday, January 19 when they host Clifton in a non-division game at 1 pm.  The Mustangs are 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the Big North Liberty Division.  This contest will be played in the upper gymnasium at Bloomfield High School.
