STATE, NJ – Democrat Cory Booker and Republican Steve Lonegan were selected as the winners for the Special Senate Primary Election, held on Tuesday August 13th. Booker and Lonegan will face off against each other in the Special Election this October.
Democrat Cory Booker is the current mayor of Newark. He won in a landslide by gaining votes from 18 of New Jersey's 21 counties.
Republican Steve Lonegan is a former Bogota mayor. He won over physician Alieta Eck by gaining votes from all of New Jersey's 21 counties.
The Special Election will take place on October 16th. The election is being held because of the death of former Senator Frank Lautenberg last June. After New Jersey governor Chris Christie called the election, it has caused controversy as it will cost 24 million dollars.
Democrats have criticized the cost of the special election pointing to the regular election in November and questioning why a Special Election is needed.
The winner of October's Special Election serves fourteen months as Senator, what would have been the remainder of Lautenberg's term.
