Do you do a lot of shopping at Amazon? Did you know that you can help the South Plainfield Public Library when you shop there? It is very simple and is for a great cause. All you have to do is designate the Friends of the South Plainfield Public Library as your charity and shop on! You go to smile.amazon.com (it’s exactly the same as amazon.com, but this is the charity site) and in the pick your own charitable organization box type in Friends of the South Plainfield Public Library and click “Search”. Select the Friends as your designated organization and shop away. The Friends of the Library will receive 0.5% from every eligible purchase you make through the Amazon Smile program. If there’s any questions, stop by the library and pick up a flyer.
Missed a movie you wanted to see in the theaters and don’t want to pay for the DVD? Come to “Monday Night Movies” at the library. It’s all the fun of a movie theater but none of the cost. We are showing brand new releases every Monday night and we will be providing popcorn for all who attend. This week’s movie features the fictional Jack Ryan character created by author Tom Clancy. In this movie, Jack Ryan, as a young covert CIA analyst, uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack. There is no registration required. You can call the library for title information or stop by and pick up a schedule of all the upcoming movies.
We are expanding our collection to now include e-magazines. Our new Zinio for Libraries Digital Magazine service gives you full digital access to some of your favorite magazines! Right now we have a limited number of magazines in our collection. You can view the magazines on your computer, or on a wide variety of desktop and mobile apps. When you first use Zinio for Libraries, you will need to create an account with your name, email, and a password, after you have logged in through the library website with your library card. Once you are logged in to Zinio for Libraries and choose your first magazine, you will have to CREATE ANOTHER ACCOUNT on Zinio.com to view magazines. We recommend using the same email address and password to set up the Zinio.com account. Once this account is created, you can use it to view any of the magazines you want to read. If you already have a Zinio account for your personal magazines, a second Zinio account will have to be created for the free access which the library is providing. You will have to download and install the appropriate app for your computer or digital device. You will be required to go to our Zinio for Libraries site to select every issue. Once you select an issue there, it will automatically be available in the app for your iPad, Kindle Fire, or other device, but the next month's issue will not automatically download. If there is any questions, stop by the library and pick up a handout that has more information.
Summer reading is almost here! Kids can come into the library and sign up for our summer reading program beginning on Monday June 23rd. This year’s theme is “Fizz Boom Read!” Children of all ages are invited to participate in our annual summer reading club. This program runs for 7 weeks and encourages children to set aside time each week to read. Each child will be given a booklet to record the titles of books/magazines/books on tape/CD that they read/listen to (the majority of materials that are used should be borrowed from our library). Each week they come in with their booklets and check in with Ms. Audrey at the summer reading desk, and they will be awarded a small participation prize and will have the chance to earn more prizes based on the amount of reading they complete. Beginning in July, we will be having various special programs for kids. You can come into the library and pick up a children’s calendar for more information. There will also be a young adult summer reading club entitled “Spark a Reaction” for students entering grades 5-12. There will be prizes for this summer reading program that will be young adult oriented. This year we are also doing an adult summer reading program in which adults can also receive prizes for the amount of books they read. If you have any questions please see our library staff.
All children’s programs are cancelled the week of June 16th. They will resume on Tuesday June 24th at 10:30am.
