Do you do a lot of shopping at Amazon?  Did you know that you can help the South Plainfield Public Library when you shop there?  It is very simple and is for a great cause.  All you have to do is designate the Friends of the South Plainfield Public Library as your charity and shop on!  You go to smile.amazon.com (it’s exactly the same as amazon.com, but this is the charity site) and in the pick your own charitable organization box type in Friends of the South Plainfield Public Library and click “Search”.  Select the Friends as your designated organization and shop away. The Friends of the Library will receive 0.5% from every eligible purchase you make through the Amazon Smile program.  If there’s any questions, stop by the library and pick up a flyer.

Our groundbreaking ceremony was a great success last week and now that the project is underway, our library has over 80,000 materials that will need a new home in our new building.  The library is holding a fundraiser for new shelving to hold our collection.  We are asking families to consider sponsoring a shelf.  The $100 dollar donation will help us purchase new shelving for our collection.  Your name will be placed on a plaque to recognize your contribution.  If you would like to donate, please come by the library and pick up a flyer to fill out.  Checks can be made payable to the South Plainfield Public Library Foundation.

Missed a movie you wanted to see in the theaters and don’t want to pay for the DVD?  Come to “Monday Night Movies” at the library.  It’s all the fun of a movie theater but none of the cost.  We are showing brand new releases every Monday night and we will be providing popcorn for all who attend.  This week’s movie is the theatrical adaptation of the first book in Veronica Roth’s bestselling dystopian trilogy.  In a world divided by factions based on virtues, Tris (Shailene Woodley) learns she's Divergent and won't fit in. When she discovers a plot to destroy Divergents, Tris and the mysterious Four (Theo James) must find out what makes Divergents dangerous before it's too late. The movie begins at 6:15pm because it is a longer movie.  There is no registration required.  You can call the library for title information or stop by and pick up a schedule of all the upcoming movies.

The week of August 9th is the last week that kids will be able to check in for our summer reading program, so if you need to get your booklet stamped please come and see Miss Audrey at the summer reading table.  On Thursday August 14th at 6:30pm there will be a Kidcraft at the Library.  There is a $1 Registration per child and paint may be used so please dress your child accordingly.  You can call or come by the library to register.

We will be following our regular schedule for the children’s programs. The Storytime program for 2s & 3s is held Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10:30.  Storytime for ages 3 and up is held Tuesday mornings at 10:30, Wednesday night at 6:30, and Thursday afternoon at 1:15.  Friday Fun is every Friday from 3-5pm.  This program is for ages 7 and up only.  These programs do not require registration.

There is going to be a new Babytime schedule going forward. We want to make sure everyone has an enjoyable and positive experience, so we are trying something new. Our The Babytime program has become so popular that it has become necessary for us to have 2 sessions; one for walkers (more active babies) and non-walkers.  Non-walkers will be first on Fridays from 10:15am-11am.  There will be 20-25 minutes of songs and rhymes followed by 20-25 minutes of play.  Walkers will follow from 11:15am-12:15pm.  There will be 25-30 minutes of songs, rhymes and finger plays followed by 25-30 minutes of play.  If you have both a non-walker and walker, please use your judgment and pick the session that you think would be most appropriate.

Get involved with your library and become a Friend!  The Friends of the South Plainfield Public Library are looking for new members!  This group will hold fundraisers that help the library with programming, and have special programs.  They also provide the discounted museum passes that are extremely popular.  All are welcome to join; you do not need to be a resident of South Plainfield.  If you are interested please come to the library to pick up an application or download one from our website.

Falling by Jane Green

Falling by Jane Green (Berkley, 2016)

Every now and again I just love a mindless romance novel, and I've been a huge fan of Jane Green's since her first book, Jemima J: A Novel About Ugly Ducklings and Swans. Despite being classified as “chick lit,” the character and plot of Jemima J. has stayed with me for sixteen years after first reading it because the story ...

The Mommy’s Review - Hidden Figures

The new movie Hidden Figures is now open in theaters nationwide, and I urge all parents out there to take your children to see it. It is a wonderful film with a wonderful message, not to mention a great endorsement of all things related to STEM.

Hidden Figures brings us to Langley, VA in the 1960s, just as NASA is preparing to launch its first Americans off of the planet and into the unknown.
