MILLBURN, NJ – Like many people in the area, Craig Fischbein had a fondness for the ice cream at Emack & Bolio’s two Millburn shops in the ‘80s and ‘90s. The Boston-based company built a loyal local following and many were sad to see them go. Now Fischbein has brought back the flavors of Emack & Bolio at his new independent ice cream shop, The Boston Ice Cream Company, located at 348 Millburn Avenue.
“During our construction, it was absolutely amazing how many people stopped by and were excited to see the name coming back to town,” Fischbein said. “We heard a lot of people say they grew up here and used to go on dates at Emack & Bolio, and now they are married to that person, so it’s not only good products but good memories for people.”
He is not at all concerned about placing his shop near the existing Haagen Dasz shop.
“Competition makes for better business,” he said. “I don’t like to put down other products, but ours is better. Their scoops are smaller than ours. The richness and creaminess, theirs is on the lighter side. Our ice cream is certified to be super-premium, which must have a butterfat content of 12 to 14 percent.” The Emack & Bolio ice cream is made in Boston and is the only ice cream The Boston Ice Cream Company will sell.
The shop will also feature other products, including candies by the pound, chocolate covered pretzels and a line of hand-made dog-treats for your canine friends.
Custom-made cakes, pies and cupcakes will also be available. Fischbein trained in Boston with Emack & Bolio’s cake designer.
The shop will be open every day and will stay open late on weekends.
“We wanted to bring the same experience back to Millburn,” Fischbein said. “People miss it. We want to give them a place to make some new memories.”
