LIVINGSTON, NJ - How great would it be if there were delivery ice cream services? Well, The Boston Ice Cream Company in Livingston is making that dream a reality.
The only ice cream company in New Jersey that ships anywhere in the United States, The Boston Ice Cream Company carries the unique brand of Emack and Bolio’s, a brand founded and started in Boston.
Started in New Jersey in the 1970s, Craig Fischbein the owner of Livingston’s Boston Ice Cream Company, says that it came back in the 90’s and hasn’t been around sense then. Now they are back.
“People that remember it from the 70’s-90’s aren’t around in New Jersey,” he said, “so now we do what we can to ship it,” said Fischbein.
There are several locations along the east coast that patrons can order at, but all orders get sent to the Livingston store and shipped out from there. The company packs the product in dry ice.
Fischbein says that any orders placed at other stores get sent to them and when those orders are sent out to customers, its just right. He says the product has a two-day delivery and is delivered at just the right temperature.
According to Fischbein, a music attorney first founded the shop. Originally wanting to open a place to play his music because blue laws restricted him from playing in a bar, he opened the ice cream store.
There’s a nostalgic feel about Emack and Bolio’s. Fischbein says that there aren’t many but the name is well-known.
“Its something that you grew up with,” he said, “something from college, your first couple of dates, something you want to remember and now you’re able to get that.”
The store does not just sell ice cream. All different types of confections including homemade fudge, ice cream cake, ice cream pizza, ice cream cupcakes, ice cream pies and more. The Livingston location even sells Jelly Belly jellybeans while others do not.
Claiming to have started “Cookies and Cream,” Emack and Bolio’s has other accolades. Its homemade fudge and original recipes have won tons of awards. Their vanilla bean flavor has claimed awards in Massachusetts for milkshakes alone.
Some flavors at Boston Ice Cream Company have achieved rock star status, as they were created from the stars themselves. For instance Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple created, “Deep Purple Cow,” raspberry ice cream with white and dark chocolate chips. MGMT recently created “Killer Hash,” which according to Fischbein is “sort of
like a rocky road in a way.”
Fischbein says his favorite is “Chunk of Funk,” a caramel ice cream with chocolate covered pretzels and more.
Emack and Bolio’s ice cream is classic and Boston Ice Cream Company in Livingston carries on that tradition.
“If you like Emack and you moved out to California and you still want to get a couple of pints, we can ship that out to you,” said Fischbein, “It's like if you lived in New York once but don’t anymore, and you still want that New York pizza.”
