MONTCLAIR, NJ — Westfield topped Montclair Kimberley Academy 7-0 in Thursday night’s boys varsity hockey game at Clary Anderson Arena. After a strong, four-goal first period, the Blue Devils never looked back.
Senior goalie Jack Ruckman recorded a shutout in his first start of the season. Brendan Hiltz opened the gate for Westfield, scoring within 2 minutes. The team held an offensive push on the Cougar defense, first period goals coming from Brendan Kotiga, Nick Forno and Matteo Mancheno.
Mancheno, the only freshman on the team, scored his first high school goal, and was rewarded with the puck after the game.
“I felt excited to score, and get the first one off early,” Mancheno said. “It was really nice for the team and coaches to give me the puck. This is a good group of guys, and I am looking forward to spending my season with this team, while continuing to play my role and help us win.”
The Blue Devils later added a second goal from Nick Forno, along with one from captain Trevor Tanella, and Andrew Principato, with less than one minute left.
After suffering a loss in their season opener to Summit 2-0, Westfield improved to 1-1. Montclair-Kimberley was shut out to start their season.
The Blue Devils will take on Rumson Fair Haven at the Red Bank Armory on Monday at 8:15 p.m.
