MENDHAM, NJ - The Millburn boys soccer team prevailed in penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie through the first 100 minutes to advances past Mendham in the semifinal round of the Section 2, Group 3 tournament on Monday.
Mendham (16-3-1) had a 1-0 lead at halftime before Millburn (13-4-1) tied it, 1-1, in the second half when Christian Clark scored on a header in the 58th minute with an assist from Rory McLaughlin. After both teams battled through two scoreless overtime periods of 10 minutes each, the match went to a shootout.
Millburn outscored the Minutement, 5-4, in PKs to survive and advance. Zach Butter nailed the decisive penalty kick to give the Millers the advantage. Millburn, the third seed, will host ninth-seeded Cliffside Park in the sectional final on Thursday.
