SEWELL, NJ – Scotch Plains-Fanwood advanced to the finals of the NJSIAA Public B Group Tournament by defeating Ridgewood, 94-76, on Tuesday evening at the GCIT campus in Sewell, NJ.
Josh Cohen and Alan Shao led the way for the Raiders. Cohen won his signature events, the 200 Freestyle (1:44.68) and the 500 Freestyle (4:43.17), and anchored the winning 200 Freestyle Relay. Meanwhile, Shao took the 200 IM (1:57.29) and the 100 Freestyle (48.20). The two seniors also combined with freshman Corey He and sophomore Matt London to take the final event of the meet, the 400 Freestyle Relay.
“This meet was tense throughout and thanks to some smart decisions from the coaches, we were able to put Alan and me in events that we could win comfortably,” Cohen said in an interview with TAPintoSPF. “The relays really showed our depth and were a major key in winning the meet."
Ridgewood did well in the stroke events with Alex Gifford winning the 100 Butterfly (53.41) and the 100 Backstroke (55.07). Jack Casavant of Ridgewood took the 100 Breaststroke (1:03.03). However, Scotch Plains-Fanwood took 2-3-4 in the Backstroke and the Breaststroke, thereby winning those races on points.
The Raiders will swim for the state championship against Mainland Regional at TCNJ on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. It will be the third time in four years that the two teams will meet in the finals. Mainland won the two prior meetings.
