PERTH AMBOY, NJ – Scotch Plains-Fanwood boys swim team’s quest for a state title stays alive as the Raiders defeated Montgomery, 97-73, at Raritan Bay YMCA in Perth Amboy on Thursday evening.
Seniors Josh Cohen and Alan Shao led the way with Cohen winning the 200 and 500 Freestyle events and Shao taking the 200 IM and 100 Backstroke. Cohen, who will swim for Georgia Tech next year, also anchored the 200 Freestyle Relay and led off the 400 Freestyle Relay, both won by Scotch Plains-Fanwood.
"We had a lot of expectations coming into this season and it took a massive effort from the entire team to step up and perform," Cohen said in an interview with TAPintoSPF. "I believe we have surpassed our goals and now look forward to continuing our run in the bracket."
The quartet of Matt London-Daniel Donaldson-Corey He-Josh Cohen won the 200 Freestyle Relay, and the team of Cohen-He-London-Aidan Trenery took the final race of the evening, the 400 Freestyle Relay.
"Being part of this team, working together for a common goal, has been an incredible experience for me," said Aidan Trenery, a freshman who anchored the winning 400 Freestyle Relaty. "It was a great meet against strong competition, and we are excited to be moving to the next round."
Montgomery kept it close, thanks to Lee Poirier, who won the 50 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly and swam the Butterfly leg of the winning 200 Medley Relay. Matthew Chen won the 100 Freestyle, and Andrew Lim won the 100 Breaststroke for the Cougars.
