SUMMIT, NJ - Bowling Team member Brianna Boze and Boys Wrestling team member Colm Dougherty have been named Summit High School Athletes of the Week, presented by The Alternative Press of Summit, for the week ending February 2.
Each week throughout the school year, one girl and boy athlete will be honored for distinguishing herself / himself in the arena of competition, in the classroom, and for demonstrating exemplary, Hilltopper-caliber sportsmanship and leadership qualities.
Boze, the team captain, finished second in the Union County Tournament, and sixth -- out of more than 200 competitors -- in the the North Jersey Sectional Tournament. In the latter event, the Senior rolled a 594 series and qualified for the Meet of Champions. “Brianna has worked very hard this season, and has become a model of consistency, bowling 600+ series on multiple occasions.” said Coach John Kratch.
Dougherty is 21-7 on the season, and placed third in the Rahway Holiday tournament in December. He bumped up a weight class against Arthur L. Johnson, and recorded a major decision to win the match for the team. Dougherty did the same against Millburn High School, assisting the team in another victory.
“Colm is getting better every week, and in every match, he competes in. He is beginning to find confidence in the neutral position, beginning to realize that his attacks are successful, and that he can score a takedown on any opponent. With more practices and matches in the next three weeks, Colm is in a great position to peak when it’s most important, during the district and region tournaments. Wrestling aside, Colm is a great athlete to have on the team from an effort and attitude point of view," said Head Coach Anthony Ferrante.
