PATERSON, NJ - Paterson Fire Chief Brian McDermott has advised individuals to avoid the area of Madison Avenue and 21st Avenue as firefighters continue to fight back a fire that has engulfed multiple structures, including at least five homes.

One firefighter has sustained minor injuries, McDermott reported.

All ramps from Route 80 have been closed.

In a Facebook Live video McDermott told 6th Ward Councilman Al Abdelaziz that while efforts have so far been successful in containing the fire his firefighters still have a “tough fight on their hands.”

Joined later by FMBA Local 2 President Kyle Hughes the two called on residents and others to prepare to offer their support in the coming days to the five families that are reported to have been impacted.

“Now that we stopped the fire it’s time to help the community,” Hughes said. “That’s how we do it.”
