Buccaneer Bay BBQ Opens

May 2, 2014 at 12:00 PM

PLAINFIELD, NJ – Buccaneer Bay BBQ, a new pirate-themed barbecue and frozen treat restaurant at 154 Terrill Road opened with much fanfare on April 24 with Assemblyman Jerry Green, Scotch Plains Mayor Kevin Glover, and Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr cutting the ribbon.

Jerome Pereira, a resident of Fanwood, hopes to create a casual, family friendly space that serves barbecue ribs, chicken, and brisket, burgers, corn dogs, plus sides like chili, cornbread and mac-and-cheese, along with Italian ice and ice cream.

The building is the site of a former Dairy Maid that was popular in the area. Buccaneer Bay’s interior features TV-screen menus, tables for dining, and a pirate-themed decor.  The walls are adorned with photos of legendary Plainfield residents Milt Campbell, the 1956 decathlon gold medalist, and Joe Black, the first African American pitcher to win a World Series game in 1952.

"Originally, Joe Grillo used to sell his famous Italian ice here and people would come from all over New Jersey for it. We have big shoes to fill," says Pereira, who remembers standing in long lines with his kids outside the building. "Everybody asked me to do barbecue because there is a shortage of it in the area."

Funding for Buccaneer came through a construction loan from Unity Bank, which has 15 bank branches in Hunterdon, Middlesex, Somerset, Union and Warren Counties in New Jersey and Northampton County, Pennsylvania.

“We wish Buccaneer Bay the best of luck with this exciting new venture,” said Unity Bank President & CEO James A. Hughes. “It was a pleasure to help fulfill a customer’s business dreams and invest in the Plainfield community.”
