Holy Trinity Interparochial School’s first “official” buddy bench was installed in the playground at the Westfield campus on May 28. The idea behind the bench came from Christian Bucks, a second grader at Roundtown Elementary in Manchester Township, who saw it in Germany when doing research online and wanted to see it implemented in his school and others.
"The buddy bench is a simple idea to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship on the playground” (buddybench.org).
When the HTIS third graders heard of the buddy bench, they decided to run a fundraiser in grades K-8 to so they could have one in their school. With the support of their teachers, Mrs. Laura Gribbin and Ms. Kristen Casorio, they successfully raised enough money to install their bench. Father Alex Pinto offered a special service to bless the bench with the students and their buddies in grades Pre-K through grade 4 present.
Now, when students see another child sitting on the bench they will ask that child to play and join in, ensuring no child feels left out.
