NUTLEY, NJ - The trustees of the Virginius D. Mattia Memorial Foundation will honor two local business leaders at the 2019 award dinner in May. The honor is bestowed on Nutley residents who demonstrate the volunteer spirit of the late Hoffmann LaRoche president.

In the past, honorees include Peter Scarpelli, Ann Troy, Frank Tangorra, Ruth and Stanley Bedford, and Frank Cocchiola. Recipients for the award are selected from nominations made by the members of the community. Last year, Nutley Thriving Survivors received the award, Barbara Carrino received the award in 2017.

Mark Boffa, grandson of Dr. Mattia, discussed what happens after the nominations are received. "We always have a problem of too many deserving people" from which to make a choice, This "says a lot about Nutley."

For 2019, the honor will be shared by David Infusino and Vincent LoCurcio, owners of Nutley Park ShopRite and Belleville ShopRite.

Most residents have attended charity event in the township in which food was donated to the event, but one of the things that sets these men apart is their practice of employing residents who may otherwise face challenges getting hired. On March 30, they are welcoming local youth to collect non-perishable food for the annual Nutley Family Service Bureai "Scouting for Food" event.

The 2019 Virginius D. Mattia Memorial Award and scholarship presentation will take place Wed.May 1 at Nanina's in the Park in Belleville. Cocktail hour starts at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are $70 each. For 2019, tickets will be available online through Eventbrite as well as from members of the Mattia Committee.

There is no need for guests to print their Eventbrite tickets, a guest list of those who paid online will be at the door on May 1.
