THE CALDWELLS, NJ -- The James Caldwell boys basketball team, coming off a successful 18-7 season this past winter, will be moved up a division next winter.
The Chiefs, who competed in the Freedom Division in 2018-19, will be shifted to the Independence Division, which is considered somewhat more competitive, next winter. One of Caldwell's co-tenants in the Independence will be West Essex High School, which stays put after a 7-19 season. However, the look of the Independence Division as a whole will be quite different next winter.
Other teams in the Independence Division for boys basketball next year will be Belleville, Arts, Cristo Rey, Glen Ridge, Newark Academy and Montclair-Kimberley Academy. These teams will no longer be in the Independence Division: Livingston, Shabazz, Cedar Grove, Verona and Weequahic.
The West Essex girls basketball team will move up from the Colonial to the more competitive Liberty Division next season. Other teams in next year's Liberty Division for girls hoops will include Verona, Columbia, Glen Ridge, Newark Academy, Nutley and Payne Tech.
The Caldwell girls basketball team will remain in the Colonial Division after playing there this season.
