Cause and Manner of Fatal Shootings in Denville Announced

August 8, 2014 at 10:00 PM

DENVILLE, NJ - In a press release on Aug. 8, Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp announced the cause and manner of yesterday’s two deaths on Arden Road in the Township of Denville, as well as confirming the identities of the two individuals.

According to the Morris County Prosecutor's Office, post-mortem examinations conducted today by Deputy Morris County Medical Examiner Carlos Fonseca, positively identified the individuals as Joan Bramhall, and her husband, John Bramhall. In addition, the post-mortem examinations revealed that Joan Bramhall’s manner of death was listed as homicide caused by a gunshot wound inflicted upon her. John Bramhall’s manner of death was listed as a suicide caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On the morning of Thursday, Aug. 7, Denville Police were dispatched to the Arden Road residence on the report of a family member reporting the discovery of a deceased person in the residence. Upon further examination by responding officers, a second deceased individual was also located in the residence. The ensuing investigation, conducted by the Major Crimes Unit of the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, the Denville Police Department and the Criminal Investigations Section of the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, did not reveal any evidence of outside intrusion into the residence.

The Morris County Board of Freeholders issued a press release today acknowledging the sudden passing of Joan Bramhall, who was a former freeholder and recently retired Morris County Clerk. The Freeholders indicated Bramhall served as freeholder from 1993 through 1998, and was elected by her colleagues to be director in 1994. She also served as the board’s deputy director. She served as County Clerk from 1999 until her retirement in December 2013.

“Joan Bramhall’s death is a tragedy for all of Morris County,” Freeholder Director Tom Mastrangelo said in the press release. “She will be greatly missed. The freeholders extended our deepest sympathies to the Bramhall family.”
